From The Mailbox: Fences

When this came through the mail over a month ago, I saw the words “The Ultimate Puke EP,” and set it in my pile without giving it much thought, with the exception of…
(yeah, maybe some other time…)
So, it became buried under other promo discs and mail, receipts, concert posters. I unearthed it today, in it’s plain-jane cardboard packaging. I queued it up in anticipation of noise, mostly. For some reason the word puke had me associating it with something that would be slightly abrasive and boisterous. However, this disc is mellow and beautiful. It’s perfect for a late afternoon in November, staring out the window at the almost-bare trees, feeling wistful.
Chris Mansfield’s voice is kinda hypnotic really. The opening track “my girl the horse,” is moodily addictive and it just gets better from there and flows like a chilly autumn river right to the end. Think: folkish, brushed drums, something sorta dreamy. If you like Bon Iver, I think you would be quite satisfied. Different, but leaves you with the same sort of feeling.
My personal favorites:
the knees
your bones
the same tattoos <3
boys around here
